Hesper
The cliffs in low mist, the sea grey and working below the headland.

A headland, a fire, and not much else.

Hesper is named for the evening star, the one that comes up over the water first. The retreat sits where it does because that is where the light is best at the end of the day.

It was a working farmhouse, then a ruin, then nine years of slow building back. We kept the thick stone walls and the orientation, which means every room still turns to the sea exactly the way the original builders pointed them.

We did not add a great deal. A sauna in the rock, a kitchen worth its salt, beds worth sleeping in, and a fire that does not go out. The rest was already here, and had been for some time.

It is run by a small number of people who live on the headland and would rather you had a quiet time than a busy one. There is no front desk. If you need something, you will find one of us.

Grass running to the cliff edge, the Atlantic stretching to the horizon.

How we think about it.

01

The sea is the luxury

We do not compete with it. The building defers to the coast and so does everything we do.

02

Less, done properly

A few things, made well, is the whole offer. Heavy linen, real bread, a fire that is always lit.

03

On the tide's clock

The day runs to the light and the water, not to a schedule. You will reset to it faster than you think.

It is quieter than it sounds, and that is the point.
